In 1758 an act was passed by the legislature in which the province of Georgia was divided into 8 parishes. In 1776, one of these original parishes (St. Philips) was renamed Bulloch County after Archibald Bulloch, the provincial governor. By 1803 the town was created, but it was not incorporated until 1866.
George Sibbald, a man of wealth from Augusta who owned large land holdings in Bulloch County, gave the community the land on which the town now stands.

However, it's unclear how the town came to be called "Statesborough." One theory says the name came about because of Thomas Jefferson who made a great argument in Virginia standing up for states' rights and the rights of people for local self-governance. Elected to the presidency in 1801, Jefferson entered office
when state rights were a popular topic. It is assumed that the name "Statesborough," which later simply became "Statesboro," originated in honor of states' rights.

Residents and visitors alike enjoy cultural and performing arts in the David H. Averitt Center for the Arts. The old circa 1911 Statesboro bank has been restored and made into a venue for community arts, activities and performances. The Averitt Center, home of the Emma Kelly Theater, is operated by the Statesboro Arts Council and is a vibrant centerpiece in the historic downtown.
The Performing Arts Center is also one of the largest and finest performing arts facilities in southeast Georgia. It is adjacent to the Nessmith-Lane Continuing Education Center, and seats 850 people.
Other area attractions include the Center for Wildlife Education and the Lamar Q. Ball, Jr., Raptor Center, the Georgia Southern Museum, the Bland Cottage, the Botanical Gardens, Mill Creek Regional Park, the planned Agribusiness Center and more. Surrounding area events include Cruisin' in the Country, the Annual Cane and Corn Grinding, Annual International Festival and many others.
There are some 16 public schools and 3 private and parochial schools in Bulloch County. There are also 2 institutions of higher learning in the greater Statesboro area: the Georgia Southern University and the Ogeechee Technical College. Other area colleges and universities include Armstrong Atlantic State University, Savannah College of Art and Design, Augusta State University, the University of South Carolina at
Aiken, Georgia College and State University and others.
Statesboro is also a leader in health care with the East Georgia Regional
Medical Center, a 150-bed $60 million hospital that features a Women's Pavilion and adjacent professional office building. Other nearby hospitals and medical centers include Candler County Hospital, Evans Memorial Hospital and Screven County Hospital.
Recreational opportunities in Statesboro are plentiful. The Willie McTell Trail provides a pedestrian walk and bicycle path, and Bulloch County recently received funding to provide a bike trail from Statesboro to nearby Brooklet. You'll also enjoy the Herty Nature Trail and the nearby Guido Gardens.
Also in Statesboro is a family water park and aquatics center called the Splash in the Boro. Mill Creek Regional Park is a large outdoors recreational facility with athletic fields and swimming area. Wolf Creek is a shaded mountain stream with easy access areas for quiet fishing. There's also nearby Canoochee River with plenty of swimming, fishing, camping and boating plus the 372-acre Evans County Public Fishing Area with 3 lakes.
And if you're looking for a beach, Ossabaw Island is the 3rd largest of the state's barrier islands, and provides 13 miles of undeveloped beaches that are open to the public up to the high tide line. Educational programming is also offered on the island, and there are managed seasonal deer and feral hog hunts.
If golf is your passion, you'll appreciate the Southern Links Golf Club with 18 holes, clubhouse banquet facilities, driving range, pro shop, snack bar and more. Other outstanding facilities include the 18-hole semi-private Eagle Creek Golf Club, Willow Lake Country Club and Evans Heights Golf Course.
